VINEYARD TERRACE

BAY AREA, CA

This garden is all about views, privacy, and comfort. Located between the main residence and an existing vineyard, the garden is intended for dining and hosting.

Two walls dive into the landscape, slipping past one another to frame views of the mountains in the distance and tucking the garden away from the adjacent road. The walls, clad in Sonoma field stone with a gentle batter on all faces, slightly enclose the east-facing terrace, creating a sense of intimacy in the landscape and a welcome escape from the afternoon heat.

At one end of the terrace, a free-standing concrete wall hides the autocourt; at the other, a grid of chitalpa trees sets up an important view from inside the house. Luma apiculata (Chilean Myrtle) are scattered throughout the terrace for shade.
